This Old-Fashioned Root Beer Dark Chocolate is our take on a classic flavor, using simple ingredients. Aromas of vanilla and marshmallow meld with creamy sarsaparilla, woody notes, rich chocolate, wintergreen and lingering licorice. Timeless and delicious.
About This BarRoot beer has been enjoyed by people in North America since at least the 1700s, when it was consumed as a root tea for medicinal benefits. The ingredients evolved in the late 1800s when it became commercialized for the public as a sweet extract, and also a drink touted for its for health benefits.
Root beer is one of our family's favorites. We especially enjoy drinking a cold, frothy root beer after a yummy meal. But “root beer” tastes very different depending on the brand you drink and the ingredients used. Sometimes it's hard to find a good "root beer" flavor.
So, we decided to taste-test ten different root beers to figure out which ones we liked best, and why. We tasted every type of root beer from grocery store brands to specialty "gourmet" root beers. We found drastic flavor differences - some we enjoyed (marshmallowy, licorice, vanilla and wintergreen), and some we didn’t (cola, cherry cough syrup, intensely sweet). And looking at the ingredients listed on the labels didn't help with figuring out what it was we liked - the labels often only listed a few things: corn syrup, cane sugar, water, some preservatives, natural and artificial flavors, and spices.
So, when it came time to make our first test batches of chocolate we were on our own. We researched the ingredients that have historically been used in root beer (some of which are now illegal!) and had fun trying new and different flavors, too. We created many different combinations, and after LOTS of test batches we came up with a robust and delicious (and legal) recipe for what we believe is the perfect root beer flavor.
We love the root beer chocolate we created using simple and natural flavors, as well as our single origin Boyaca cacao. And we know you will, too! We even listed every ingredient so that you can understand how different flavors play off of each other and combine to create new experiences. About our Boyaca Cacao
We are proud to be one of the first chocolate makers to work with Impulsa Bacao and use their Colombian Boyaca beans to make our chocolate. In addition to the beans' comforting and delicious flavor profile, we were truly impressed but the desire and commitment of the community to consistently grow and produce high quality cacao.
Years ago smallholder farmers from San Pablo de Borbur, Colombia were some of the first to voluntarily depart from the divisive and violent coca-production lifestyle. They chose a healthier, safer and more enjoyable path, which includes working together to produce the cacao we rely on to craft this Limited Release bar as well as our award-winning Boyaca 73% dark chocolate.
