Hot Cocoa, House Blend

 

We make our delicious hot cocoa from the same premium single origin beans we use to make our chocolate!  Our house blend is our own mix of fresh pressed cacao powder from our single origin beans, including Nicaragua, Guatemala and Mexico.

We’re one of only a few chocolate makers who press their own cocoa butter.  One of the many benefits of this time consuming process is that we’re able to make this rich, incredibly flavorful hot cocoa mix from scratch right here in our kitchen.

Most hot cocoa is alkalized, which means it’s washed with a solution of potassium carbonate.  This process allows the cocoa powder to dissolve in milk or water more easily, but significantly alters the flavor.  Alkalizing also removes a significant amount of the natural flavanols, which are compounds that play a significant role in the beneficial effects of eating cacao.

Our cocoa is NOT alkalized.  You may need to stir your hot cocoa a bit more vigorously but you’ll taste the unique flavor of the beans, and get the full benefit of cacao’s flavanols!

Fabulous smooth taste with a deep rich flavor

Good but too sweet

I like the clear cocoa flavor in Goodnow Farms products and had the hot chocolate in George Horwell cafes. Since they stopped carrying it, I decided to buy online. Maybe I got a different version, but the house blend was surprisingly sweet (not in a good way). I was disappointed to see that the sugar/cocoa ratio was the same as that of Starbucks mix. I still like the flavor, but it's very diluted when I reduce the mix to make it less sweet. Maybe the other hot chocolate blends will be less sweet.

Amazing cup of cocoa!

Whipped up a large Yeti mug full of this hot cocoa blend for a hockey game and it was SO delicious! Love the depth of flavor and tones. Made with local grassfed whole milk. Buy it!

I'm not a coffee drinker, and I hadn't been enthusiastic about mass produced hot cocoa in the past. I gave this a try because I thought it would be different. It sure was, delicious while drinking and leaves a pleasant aftertaste. Glad I got this as a gift because I realize it was the quality I'd been missing.
