El Carmen Hot Cocoa

We make our delicious hot cocoa from the same premium single origin beans we use to make our chocolate, so each variety has it’s own unique flavor profile!  This El Carmen has a classic hot cocoa flavor with caramel notes.

We’re one of only a few chocolate makers who press their own cocoa butter.  One of the many benefits of this time consuming process is that we’re able to make this rich, incredibly flavorful hot cocoa mix from scratch right here in our kitchen.

Most hot cocoa is alkalized, which means it’s washed with a solution of potassium carbonate.  This allows the cocoa powder to dissolve in milk or water more easily, but significantly alters the flavor.  Alkalizing also removes a significant amount of the natural flavanols, which are compounds that play a significant role in the beneficial effects of eating cacao.

Our cocoa is NOT alkalized.  You may need to stir a your hot cocoa a bit more vigorously but you’ll taste the unique flavor of the beans, and get the full benefit of cacao’s flavanols!

The cocoa is very rich, delicious, and gourmet. It does take a little more effort to stir in then typical hot cocoa mix but is well worth it.

Another Exotic Choice from Goodnow Farms

We tried both the El Carmen and the Almendra. I preferred the El Carmen. While both were bursting with unique flavor, El Carmen had a richness that the Almendra did not. Both certainly have their place. Go nuts, try them both. Treat yourself!

caramel cocoa deliciousness

First Goodnow Farms hot chocolate experience, and it’s amazing yumminess in a mug! There wasn’t any specific directions on how much liquid to powder, so followed other reviews and went with 1/2c milk to 1T cocoa .. and it was perfect. Easily mixed to a creamy cocoa drink with a whisk, which also added a frothed top as a plus. This is definitely on the sweeter side of the cocoa spectrum due to the sweet caramel tones, but a delicious change. Looking forward to enjoying more and totally recommend.
